About the event
“Berlin Sex Spaces”: Multimedia Exhibition Explores Berlin’s History as a Sanctuary for Sexuality. From October 31 to November 29, the exhibition presents historical installations and artworks that illuminate Berlin’s unique history of sex-positive spaces. “Berlin Sex Spaces,” organized by the Culterim Gallery at Gesundbrunnen, is a historical-artistic exhibition by the Berlin Sex Museum, funded by the Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion. In this exhibition, visitors encounter the vibrant history of Berlin’s so-called “sex spaces”—places outside the private sphere where people come together for sexual encounters—from the 1920s to the present day. Through immersive installations, visitors encounter bars, brothels, cruising spots, and darkrooms that became places of encounter, desire, and expression. The exhibition tells and celebrates the stories of freedom, desire, excitement, and secrecy that have always surrounded sex spaces, while also recalling their suppression and the loss of such places. Visitors are invited to reflect on the current political situation of sex spaces in Berlin, as well as their significance and sustainability for the city—especially for marginalized groups. The exhibition's multimedia approach includes a filmed interview with Peter Rausch, the founder of the Sonntags-Club; artworks by Gustav Sonntag and Tonja Wetzel; an interactive map developed by Helen Begovic of Playing History; and historical-artistic installations of a 1920s club and a 1990s darkroom interpretation. “Berlin Sex Spaces” is the first public exhibition of the Berlin Sex Museum, founded by Elise Hanrahan, Lais Castro Reis, and Lorraine Rumson. The museum is currently developing pop-up exhibitions and plans to open a permanent location in Berlin in the coming years. Exhibition dates: October 31 – November 29, 2025. Opening hours: Thursday–Saturday, 12 pm–8 pm (other times by appointment). Location: Culterim Gallery, Brunnenstraße 105–109, 13355 Berlin (in the shopping center). Admission: Free, donations welcome.
