Everything Left Seemed Possible Exhibition
Culterim | Spaces | Backshop
Marble, glass, steel, bones, flesh - coming together and breaking apart.
The tension between the viewer and the viewed, the researcher and the
researcher, the real and the imagined, and what remains.
Ian Light-Maka and Julia Oram present a duo show where their distinct practices
combine to reflect on dissolution and unification and that which comes after.
Ian Light-Maka presents expressive figurative works spanning from life drawings
to renderings of the remains of life itself and exploring the contrasting levels
of empathy afforded to the human form. His works point to an emotional
detachment enabled or even forced by careful study or constant exposure, as
the visceral becomes the mundane.
Julia Oram’s work centres on combining materials that deliberately generate
tension; materials that are not typically paired together, in the making process,
carry the possibility of failure. This contrast becomes embedded in the final
pieces, where fragility is not only structural but conceptual, opening onto themes
of identity and vulnerability.
Everything Left Seemed Possible is a joint exhibition of Julia Oram’s organic
sculptural works and Ian Light-Maka’s figurative ink and oil paintings that aims
to explore the emergence of an emotional language across distinct artforms.
Themes of the breakdown of communication and connection, and the possibility
of humanity nonetheless - emerge through figurative works while in parallel the
materiality of organic abstract sculptures provides a means to reflect on how
emotional states come into being through primal, organic forms.
