Skins of my Father - Katrin Leuchtgelbs Animalische Observationen
Alex
An exhibition about decades and generations of watching animals.
"My father worked for many years in Apartheid South Africa. As both my parents died recently, it is now my (and my sisters) duty to clean out their house. When I was small, I grew up in a colourful house full of taxidermied animals and furs from South Africa. After working in South Africa for about 10 years, my father returned to Austria with a lot of specimens, all of them with stories behind them: A leopard rug from a “Man Eating” Leopard, that was shot on my uncles cow farm. Stories about my other uncle, that was one day eaten by his own crocodiles on his leather farm. A cut off elephant leg, that we kids found particulary gruesome, as my mother loved elephants and my grandfather lost his leg in the second world war... My family and I are deeply connected to the wildlife all around us. My mother spent years of feeding and watching the wild birds outside our window. Thousands of far away and kinda blurry fotos of animals that were shot on holidays.
But slowly and steadily the animals around us vanish. Are we still connected?"
This show will also feature writers, that observe animals around themselves.
