Trart
24–29 May 2025, Culterim | Backshop | Gesundbrunnen
Opening: 24 May 2025, 6pm–9pm
Trart is an exhibition that explores one of many ways to repurpose plastic and forms part of Sofia Antoniadou’s Master’s research on sustainability in art. The installations are created from plastic bags and packaging collected over several years. By applying heat and pressure, the artist transforms these everyday materials into a more durable, textile-like surface — a layered and vivid new form.
What makes this process unique is the unexpected beauty that emerges through heat: dense textures and varied surfaces shaped by different types and quantities of plastic. Even the act of collecting — or hoarding — plastic becomes an integral element of the conceptual work.
Trart moves beyond conventional recycling. Instead of treating waste as a final stage, the exhibition reimagines it as material with potential. In doing so, it aligns with broader reuse movements (like RECUPS/REBOWLS), offering a poetic and critical reflection on consumption and sustainability through artistic practice.
