Nina Bachmann was born in Munich in 1990, and continues to live and work in the city. Forging a practice based on deliberate exaggeration and social commentary, Bachmann creates colourful, luminous works featuring her distinctly yellow and gender-ambiguous characters. They engage in everyday activities, such as taking public transportation, partying and otherwise socialising, but with an air of excess. Their ecstasy, lack of inhibition and yet blank expressions of insecurity or doubt creates an equivocation that has become an identifying feature of Bachmann’s work. The performative aspect of socialising, or otherwise being among peers, comes up as an unavoidable subject when observing Bachmann’s works. Intoxication is referenced in several works where Bachmann’s protagonists engage in club culture and drink – but deeper than that, it reflects a pattern of behaviour in our society, of being ‘intoxicated’ on the excesses of life. Feeling simultaneously empty, and superficially fulfilled. Bachmann’s vulnerability shines through the works, providing a space for reflection rather than answers.

Nina Bachmann has presented solo exhibitions at Galerie Tassilo Usner (Vienna), Moosey Art (London), Galerie Annika Nuttall (Denmark), and Better Go South (Berlin), among others, as well as participating in Enter Art Fair, Urvanity Art Fair, and Busan Art Fair. She was also nominated for the Strabag Art Award. Her works have been exhibited internationally, in Germany, Dubai, Spain, Denmark, Austria, South Korea, and China, among others.
