Elisa Breyer

Elisa Breyer was born in Berlin in 1995, where she lives and works today. Completing her studies in Visual Communications at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Breyer continued her education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.

In her work, Breyer frequently references popular culture, which she understands is defined by politics and economics, not just trends. Her bright compositions are only the tip of a much bigger iceberg that reflects on contemporary shifts in politics, the real-life effects this has on us, and attempts to find the humour in all of it. Her tongue-in-cheek references and irony is not only a part of the works, but Breyer’s practice as a whole. As a painter in the digital age, the artist must grapple with what image-making means and relates this to a deep awareness of contemporary social sentiments. Working with reference images from popular media and her own archive, Breyer utilises icons for the viewer to see themselves in, and in such her paintings become a surface for reidentification. As the viewer sees themselves in the work, they see
themselves through objects, moments, and characters that we are taught to define ourselves with. Breyer’s acute awareness of this phenomenon expands beyond a passion for popular culture, but rather a passion for a shared reality.

Elisa Breyer has shown her works in Vienna, Berlin, London, Porto, Stuttgart, and Lyon, among others. Her recent solo shows include ‘That Itchy Feeling After You Use Soap’ at  Miettienen Collection and ‘waiting for connection…’ at Galerie Gegen & Lücke.
